Lesson 10: Linear Kick – Vertical target

Lesson 10 Regular Kick – vertical target. Regular kicks are classified as linear techniques, although strictly speaking this is incorrect. Linear strikes typically can be delivered with no hip rotation – hence our classification.Notes: Linear kicks can be delivered to either vertical targets, shin, knee, torso. Or they can be delivered to horizontal targets. Horizontal targets would typically be underneath the pelvis (groin kick from underneath) or the face if the aggressor is bent forward.

Coaching points

  • Step into target and kick through it
  • Use the shin where possible if attacking the groin. Avoid using the top of the foot
  • Use the sole of the foot when attacking a vertical target (knee- torso)
  • Keep the hands up when kicking – you may get countered by a strike to the face
