Krav Maga Bristol

Krav Maga Bristol was launched by Paul Grey in 2005 with the intention of providing professional coaching in authentic Israeli Krav Maga in the Bristol area. 15 years on, we are still here…

What is Krav Maga

Krav Maga is best described as a self-defence and fitness training system from Israel. The Krav Maga system became famous as the official hand to hand combat system of the Israeli military going on to be taught to over 500 military, Police and Law Enforcement units internationally.

With the events of 9/11 reality-based self-defence systems became increasingly with the general public and Krav Maga’s reputation as a fast to learn, military combat system propelled it to the fore. Krav Maga became popular in Hollywood featuring in numerous films from Jenifer Lopez’s ‘Enough’ to the Gunman (Sean Penn) and James Bond. Krav Maga was even featured in the Simpsons series. Today Krav Maga is the most widely taught reality-based self-defence system in the world and its popularity seems set to continue. The school grey steadily going on to become one of the largest Krav Maga schools in the UK, with over 200 active adult only members.

Starting Krav Maga

Krav Maga offers a unique training experience for those interested in participating. Krav Maga best be described as the Crossfit of the martial arts world. By this we mean it offers functional, intense training in a supportive community atmosphere.

How long does it take to learn Krav Maga

Krav Maga was renown for the speed at which people can become competent at defending themselves. This was Krav Maga’s reason for existence in the first place – a fast – effective hand to hand combat system for the military. The system is relatively quick to learn and the basics can be learned and applied realistically in a couple of months.

British Krav Maga did some interesting research on the matter. It was found that 63% of students could be pre-exhausted and apply Krav Maga over a range of 6 common attacks in realistic scenarios 12 weeks. What is interesting, is that almost 50% of these students were training only once weekly – in other words, 63% of those training over 12 sessions could effectively protect themselves in realistic scenarios.

However, what gets more interesting is that 87% of those training twice weekly could effectively protect themselves over 12 weeks. Tested over the same criteria at 16 weeks, 92% of all candidates were able to protect themselves. This gives us some reliable data points. Train twice weekly and there is almost a 90% chance you’ll be able to protect yourself in a common street attack scenario.

Krav Maga for Self Defence

For many, the original reason for becoming involved in Krav Maga is purely self-defence. Given Krav Maga’s military background and reputation as a no-nonsense practical system, Krav Maga is particularly attractive to people wanting self-defence training. Another aspect of training that people find particularly appealing is Krav Maga’s emphasis on simple, instinctive behaviours.

The net result of this is that Krav Maga is faster to learn than martial arts and more reliable under high-stress situations.

From functional to exceptional

To be clear, we are not implying that after 12 weeks these candidates looked like professional fighters. The skills they had were functional and effective – not smooth and efficient in the same way as an experienced professional fighter may be. But that misses the point, the majority of students want something that works now, not 10 000 hours later.

To become exceptional you need to commit time, measured effort, consistent training and regular coaching. This can take years depending on your definition of exceptional but we usually see this level of skill emerging at around 4 years. These students typically go on to become Instructors.
